Female age and egg size in the Lesser Snow Goose
نویسندگان
چکیده
younger birds laying slightly smaller eggs in each position within the laying sequence. Some physiological maturation process was probably responsible for the smaller eggs younger birds laid because the pattern held within individuals. However, changes in egg size and shape may be due to breeding experience rather than age itself. We detected no evidence for age-specific differences in egg size of older birds. Thus, neither senescent declines in egg size nor an increased allocation of reserves to reproduction appear to be occurring in this species.

Nutrient Reserves and Reproductive Performance of Female Lesser Snow Geese
--We studied the relation between nutrient reserves and reproductive performance of female Lesser Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) in 1971 and 1972 at the McConnell River (60ø50'N, 94ø25'W), Northwest Territories, Canada. We determined the potential clutch size of a pre-laying female by counting large (>20 mm), highly vascularized ovarian follicles; actual clutch size of post-laying ...
متن کاملEgg size as a predictor of nutrient composition of eggs and neonates of Canada Geese (Branta canadensis interior) and Lesser Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens)
Fresh and pipped eggs were collected to provide data on nutrient composition of eggs and neonates, respectively, of Canada Geese (Branta canadensis interior) and Lesser Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens). We sought to determine how well a commonly used and simple index like estimated egg volume or “egg size” predicted egg composition and neonate characteristics including body compositi...
متن کاملPasteurella multocida serotype 1 isolated from a lesser snow goose: evidence of a carrier state.
Pharyngeal swabs were collected from 298 lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) at Banks Island (Northwest Territories. Canada) in the summer of 1994. Pasteurella multocida serotype 1 was isolated from an adult male bird and P. multocida serotype 3 was isolated from an adult female goose. Pathogenicity of the serotype 1 isolate was confirmed by inoculation in Pekin ducks (Anas platy...
متن کاملBody Size and Fecundity in Lesser Snow Geese
Davies et al. (1988) concluded that body size did not directly influence annual fecundity in Lesser Snow Geese (Chen c. caerulescens, hereafter called Snow Geese). This disagrees with Ankney and Macinnes (1978) who showed that there was a positive correlation between culmen length and body mass in prelaying female Snow Geese, and that heavier females laid more eggs than did lighter females. A r...
متن کاملEvidence of Territoriality and Species Interactions from Spatial Point-Pattern Analyses of Subarctic-Nesting Geese
Quantifying spatial patterns of bird nests and nest fate provides insights into processes influencing a species' distribution. At Cape Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, recent declines in breeding Eastern Prairie Population Canada geese (Branta canadensis interior) has coincided with increasing populations of nesting lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) and Ross's geese (Chen rossii). ...
